Chile Con Carne
By Carmen Aguirre

In 1973, Chile's first democratically elected leader Salvador Allende is brutally assassinated in a military coup. Forced to leave their country, seven-year-old Manuelita and her family come to Canada, political refugees, to begin new lives. Through Manuelita's anecdotes and voice we experience the joy, loss, absurdity and pain of the displaced person's experience in Canada. From learning a new language, to finding allies, encountering racism and finding solace in community, Chile Con Carne is a journey illuminating the innocence of childhood thrown against the brutality of war. Through a child's dreams we learn about the isolation of being a refugee in Canada.
