  Nueva Voz Mentorship
and Youth Initiatives

As one of Canada's leading Latin American theatre companies, we feel it is our role to reach out and support our youth. By maintaining a strong relationship with our community we can give Latin-American youth tools to explore issues of racism, stereotypes, gang violence, family, sexuality, power, and identity. Our goal is to celebrate Latin American culture in Canada, through the creation of new theatre.

Nueva Voz will provide an artistic forum for Toronto’s Latin-American youth. Our aim is to support the needs, stories and visions of these individuals in order that they be heard and respected. By giving them a voice through theatre-based workshops, culminating in a final presentation in the professional space of Theatre Direct , these youth will gain concrete experience creating and producing a new piece of theatre.

Nueva Voz: Background Information

According to the 2009 report "Four in Ten: Spanish Speaking Youth and Early School Leaving in Toronto", published by the Latin American Research Education and Development Network (LARED) at the OISE (University of Toronto), “the average dropout rate in Toronto high schools is 23 percent. Among Spanish-speaking people, the dropout rate is almost 40 percent. This sets off alarm bells in our community, because it means that for every 100 Spanish-speaking students who enter high school every year, 40 will face enormous challenges during their youth and adulthood to fully integrate into the economic, social, political and cultural life of this country".

Youth Participants

The project is designed for young Latinos/as roughly between the ages of 14 and 19, who may be interested in theatre but not necessarily have the experience. We are looking for a diverse representation of youth in terms of class, theatre experience, leadership abilities, and schools. We will be selecting 10 Latino youth to participate in this year’s pilot project, through the recommendations of specific community service organizations, community leaders, youth programs and via the TDSB/TCDSB schools.
